One of the non-Linux Hosting related questions that A2 Hosting is often asked is, “What does the ‘A2’ in your company name stand for?” The “A2” refers to a local nickname for the 2 A’s that start both words for the city that we are located in, Ann Arbor. Next time you visit our website, keep in mind that you are essentially visiting Ann Arbor Web Hosting.
Now that we have shared this knowledge, I wanted to pass along some more information. Save 15% off any of our packages when you use the coupon code “forums15off”. Act fast! This discount expires June 30, 2008.

I was doing my daily Linux Hosting research a few days ago and I came across the term “bleeding edge”. I thought it was a typo because I’m sure that most of us have heard of the term “cutting edge”. I decided to ask one of my A2 Hosting colleagues regarding this term. It wasn’t a typo after all. The term bleeding edge is actually an industry term. Bleeding edge refers to certain technology that is a step or two before cutting edge, to the point that it is SO new that there are likely stability and productivity issues involved with the technology.

I wanted to take a break from Linux web hosting talk for a moment and share a very cool site that one of A2 Hosting’s very own has created. It is called My Phone Blaster. This is a perfect example of web development innovation. The site allows you to upload an MP3 file and it automatically calls a phone number of your choice with the first 15 seconds of the song clip. Fun!
Now for $4.99, you can purchase 25 credits (only $.19 per call). The purpose of the credits? Not only does your clip play for the full duration, but you also get to set the number that the call receiver will see on their caller ID.
There are obviously many situations that you can use this site for. There are 2 particular scenarios that I would like to share:
The first is sending a song to a “crush” that has given you their phone number, but they don’t necessarily know your phone number. If you know their favorite song or you have a song that you wanted to send your crush, they’ll see this unfamiliar phone number and call you back to see who sent them the thoughtful song that they love. And who reaps the credit for the call? You do!
The second situation occurs when you have a buddy who has complained that they hate a particular song or they can’t get one out of their head. How can you have some fun with that friend? You blast that song throughout the day to them so it definitely remains stuck in their head. This is an easy and affordable way to have some friendly fun at your buddy’s expense.
Oh! And after sending the file, you even get to hear their reaction.

I wanted to take a moment to point out a nice A2 Hosting review written by Ben Simon on his blog found here. He mentions a lot of great characteristics that customers will experience when hosting their site at A2 Hosting. Some excerpts from his post include:
“Their shared hosting includes: MySQL 5.0, PHP 5 and Postgres. I’ve found Postgres to often be missing from discount hosting services.”
“The response to questions / issues has always been fast.”
“- for about $47.00, you can get a year’s worth of hosting.”
Thanks Ben for sending out all of the A2 Hosting love!

As you have probably noticed on the A2 Hosting homepage, we display a number of seals. The 3 seals of particular importance are ones from the Better Business Bureau, HackerSafe and RatePoint. I thought I would provide a brief synopsis of the purpose of these 3 seals.
Better Business Bureau Accreditation – For A2 Hosting to be able to display the BBB seal, it means that we are an accredited business in the BBB’s service area for at least one year and in the case of unresolved consumer complaints, we agree to participate and fulfill the requirements of any decisions made via a formal BBB dispute settlement. Essentially it is an insurance policy that we offer our customers in the occurrence that they have a problem with our service.
Feel free to visit the A2 Hosting accredited BBB page. A2 Hosting currently has a “Satisfactory record”. This means that A2 Hosting has been in business for at least 12 months, we have properly and promptly addressed any issues referred to the BBB, and we are free from an unusual volume or pattern of complaints and law enforcement action. It also means that the BBB has a clear understanding of what A2 Hosting does and doesn’t have any concerns about our industry.
RatePoint – This is our 3rd party testimonial service. RatePoint allows our customers to rate and review us. It also allows future customers to read feedback of our business so that they can make informed purchasing decisions. Feel free to visit the A2 Hosting RatePoint page.
HackerSafe – This is our “trust” seal. This seal informs customers that A2 Hosting has been tested and certified daily to pass the McAfee Secure Security Scan. This seal means that consumer data is safe from hacker access. Sites, including A2 Hosting’s, that are scanned daily for known vulnerabilities can prevent over 99% of hacker crime.

The cool thing about making your business (or household for that matter) greener is that many of these steps are cost cutting as well. That’s an extra incentive to create a greener business.
1.) Employee Input – Ask the employees for realistic efforts that everyone can make to reduce the carbon footprint.
2.) Commutes – Offer carpooling and telecommuting programs.
3.) Purchase Green Products – Research and purchase green alternatives for products that you use
4.) Let ‘em Know Your Intentions – Let your customers and business partners know of your green initiative for feedback and see how they can get involved/help as well.
5.) Reduce Business Travel – Reduction can take place by working with your partners to plan your business trips to allow you to meet with a number of those partners during a single trip.
6.) Toxin Disposal – For harmful products that you can’t avoid using, make sure to dispose of those in the proper manner.
7.) Recycle Bins – This probably the simplest way to contribute, but many companies just don’t place recycle bins or boxes throughout the office.
8.) Cut back on the paper – Encourage employees to take notes in word processing programs and make employees accountable for printing, especially that which is unnecessary.
9.) No more disposable cups – Purchase or encourage employees to bring in thermoses or water bottles.
10.) Check the trash – Take a moment to peek through the office garbage can. Are there non-disposable alternatives to what you discover?
