I am a big fan of Firefox not only because I find that it is functionally better than Internet Explorer, but more importantly because of the wide array of skins and cool add ons. One particular add on is the Stop! Hammertime! addition to the Firefox browser’s stop button. Whenever a page is loading and you press the stop button, this add on will play “Stop! Hammertime” through your computer speakers. I don’t use the stop button often, but I use it more than ever now just so I can hear MC Hammer.

Our motto at A2 Hosting is “Leading Edge Hosting, Exceptional Support”. Get the support you need whether you are brand new to web development or a seasoned pro. Located in Metro Detroit, we are the hosting company that you have been looking for.

We just pulled some customer satisfaction statistics. Turns out that 97%
of A2 Hosting customers would refer us to their family and friends. Internally, we have to say that we are ecstatic about that stat and are proud that our hard work is paying off in regards to happy customers.

I wanted to take a quick break from technical postings and share a completely irrelevant marketing story, as I am a marketer at heart. I love business competition from a consumer perspective. It drives down prices and ultimately creates better products. Here is a recent example.

For as long as I can pretty much remember, I have looked forward to March because of McDonald’s minty Shamrock Shakes. They are a St. Patrick’s Day promotion and only available during March. I think they are delicious, but can’t really be so sure because I get so excited when they come out each year. I always say they should keep them out all year, but I think they are marketed liked this on purpose. I go to McDonalds about five times a year, always in March, and I never order anything except a Shamrock Shake. I don’t think I would go to McDonald’s five times a year if they were available all year long. When March comes, I know I don’t have much time to get my fix.

Well I was on my way to purchase a late night shamrock shake recently when I drove by a Burger King with an advertisement for Irish Mint Shakes. What a wonderful idea. It seemed as though Burger King had finally stolen some of McDonald’s St Patty’s Day thunder. I figured that it was only fair to give Burger King’s version of the minty shake a try. I pulled into the drive-in and ordered a medium Irish Mint Shake, only to be shot down by the fact that their shake machine was down. That was no way to break into McDonald’s St Patrick’s milkshake monopoly.

The moral of the story: You can create the most innovative products, but if you can’t deliver them to your customer, you will always be stuck in mud.

One of the business aspects that we at A2 Hosting are very proud of is our dedication to green hosting. I know that I have mentioned our partnership with Carbon Fund, the leading carbon offsetting organization, but I have not mentioned actually what we do as a company to contribute to a healthy environment. I figured it was about time to do so.

*We have reduced both Styrofoam and plastic waste through the encouragement of employees to use thermoses and Nalgene drinking containers rather than wasteful disposable cups.

*We utilize a number of various telecommuting practices to reduce automobile emissions caused by daily employee commutes to the A2 Hosting office.

*We recycle our outdated computers by using them as internal servers, dedicated servers for clients with lower resource requirements and by re-selling them to the public instead of merely throwing them away.

*A number of our employees ride motorcycles to work when weather the permits thus further reducing gasoline emissions.

In the past, I have spoken very highly of Google AdSense. I see it as a great revenue generator for anyone who wants to start a site and am impressed by offering AdSense for their free Blogspot blogging servie. I am a little perturbed with this advertising program at the moment though. Because AdSense shows ads based on the content of your page for relevance purposes, publishers don’t really have any control over what ads show up on their pages.  This doesn’t necessarily become a problem if you have a content site and don’t really care what ads appear. However, let’s say you are a business with a ton of competitors who wants to use AdSense. You obviously care what ads are showing up because you do not want competitor ads to show up on your site.

You should just be able to filter those ads out, right? AdSense does have a competitive ad filtering system. The problem is that you can only filter by URL. What if you have thousands of competitors? There is no way to filter out all of those URLs.

I would like to see AdSense allow publishers to choose different categories for the ads shown on their site. The problem arises though when an advertiser doesn’t put their ads in the correct category and also when the publisher picks an irrelevant ad category to put on their website. AdSense loses the ability to control the relevance of advertisements, losing control of something that they pride themselves on.

Yesterday I wrote about A2 Hosting’s OpenVZ VPS Hosting. I defined VPS Hosting as  “…a method of dividing a full server into smaller, multiple virtual servers that appear and behave much like a dedicated server.” I started thinking about this definition and the blog post and thought it might be important to differentiate between VPS Hosting and Semi-dedicated hosting. If VPS Hosting appears and behaves much like a dedicated server, than what exactly is semi-dedicated hosting behaving like?

Feature-wise, Semi-Dedicated plans are actually closer to a large Reseller Hosting plan whereas a VPS plan is closer to a small dedicated hosting package. With a semi-dedicated account, you share the server with between only 10-20 different accounts, which is much less than what is shared on a regular shared or reseller hosting package. On a VPS account, you might be sharing your account with more than 20 other people, but the server is partitioned off so that one account does not impact the account of another. However, with a semi-dedicated account, customers will receive huge disk space limits at A2 Hosting (100GB-200GB) depending on the package of choice compared to a VPS account (5GB-50GB).
